Podgora

The settlement of Podgora is the administrative seat of the municipality of Podgora, which also includes Igrane, Drašnice and Živogošće. History and development have also formed two separate settlements here: Gornja (Stara) Podgora and Donja Podgora (Kraj), which was created in the 60s of the 20th century by the sea, after Gornja Podgora perished in a devastating earthquake. The new settlement and population migration to the coast also mark the beginning of the intensive development of tourism and the branding of Podgora as a tourist destination.

Life here has always been marked by the sea. Even today, Podgora intensively nurtures the tradition of fishing, so that in the port of Podgora, which dominates the centre of the town, we can see numerous boats that are in the service of excursion tourism in the summer. The architecture of the settlement is dominated by larger family houses, whose owners are engaged in tourism. Stara Podgora, a settlement of autochthonous stone houses surrounded by olive groves, is particularly attractive. The old town is intensively restored, taking care to preserve the originality, but also to raise the quality of the accommodation, so that there are many modern urban villas in this location.

2,257 inhabitants live in Podgora. Due to the preserved nature, the long coastline of beautiful beaches, olive growing and fishing, Podgora is known as one of the most picturesque places on the Makarska Riviera.
