Zaostrog

The village of Zaostrog is located in a natural and spacious cove, surrounded by the high and steep slopes of the Biokovo Rilić mountain massif, and administratively it belongs to the municipality of Gradac. The village with only 228 inhabitants is dominated by the Franciscan monastery of St. Marije, more than half a century old. It is famous for the fact that Andrija Kačić Miošić, one of the most famous Croatian folk poets, spent a large part of his working and creative life here, and his grave is also located within the monastery.

Did you know that Zaostrog is the only place in the world where the sun rises twice during the same morning in one period of the year? Namely, the Sun appears for the first time under Mount Viter, after which it hides behind the rugged rocks for about twenty minutes and then rises again. This rare occurrence is a unique worldwide phenomenon.
